Desulo is an ancient village nestling in the heart of the western Gennargentu massif. The area has been inhabited since the New Stone age, as witnessed by the many nuraghes scattered in the countryside, including the ruins of the Nuraghe Ura ‘e Sole, the highest-placed in the whole of Sardinia.
In town, get to know about local folk customs in the Montanaru Country Life Museum, hosted in the birthplace home of poet Antonio Casula, with its fine collection of traditional clothing and farm tools and objects. In the house you can also visit the poet’s library and see collection of letters. On 20 January and the first Sunday in July Desulo celebrates San Sebastiano with a solemn mass and a huge bonfire. From 31 October to 2 November the town hosts La Montagna Produce, a local fair promoting typical mountain produce and carved wooden handicrafts. The fair includes a literary event: the Montanaru Award for poetry in the Sardinian language.
