Discovering Sardinia in the Wild, Pedaling from Alghero to Sardara: A ROAD BIKE TOUR for Avid Cyclists!

Could 60 miles with high elevation gains p/day be enough for your next road bike tour in Italy?
We will provide excellent accommodations, beautiful cycling roads and top-of-the-line bicycles for your cycling enjoyment.

on this road bike tour you will spend a week biking in Rugged Landscapes all around the island: from the west coast, (Alghero and Bosa), to Medieval Villages and Roman Towns, such as Santu Lussurgiu and Sardara.

Along the way, you can visit the Punic-Roman ruins complex of Tharros or visit the protected beach of Is Arutas made of pure white quartz pebbles. You will cycle to Medieval Bosa and through the mountainous Montiferru region.

Then you will ride down to Fordongianus, where you will be able to visit the ancient Roman thermal SPA. Your final destination is Sardara, just before your last ride to the Costa Verde; a breathtaking, protected mountain wilderness, coastal protected area with amazing cycling roads.

Cagliari airport is not too far: we can arrange a private transfer or there are several buses available during the day.

Itinerary

Day 1Benvenuti to Alghero & the Coral Coast. 35km / 21mi (optional test ride)

Meet & greet in Alghero, bike fitting and Orientation. Alghero is a lively and pretty city and a flourishing tourist attraction not only for the summer masses and elite tourism, but also for a new cosmopolitanism. Bike-test after fitting and briefing. Take a stroll in the old-town where you can take pleasure walking around or just sitting down while enjoying a drink at sunset before a seafood dinner! Overnight in Alghero.

Day 2 Alghero Loop to Sitnitino: Asinara Island. 145km / 90mi Ascent +1080 m.

Loop bike ride from Alghero to Stintino and return via Nurra region. Start from your hotel and cycle through the vineyards of northern Sardinia. Take a coffee break in Stintino; from here, you can admire the island of Asinara, which was the location of a secluded and active prison. Ride back to Alghero to enjoy the Catalan Fortified city. Less distance is possible visiting the Argentiera old mine village and Capo Caccia cliffs and cave. Overnight in Alghero.

Day 3Alghero to Santu Lussurgiu: medieval hilltown. 87km / 54mi. Ascent +1700 m.

Skirt the coast on rolling hilly terrain. You depart Alghero cycling up and down beautiful highlands. Admire the massive castle and surrounding village Malaspina in Bosa where you can stop for a fantastic gelato and walk in the center of the town or along the river. Just after Bosa you will pass the Malvasia Valley where they produce the famous Malvasia dried white wine. After that, you will pedal up to the Planargia Plateau and you will pass many characteristic, small Sardinian villages. You will arrive in Santu Lussurgiu after climbing the glorious Montiferru mountain. Overnight in Santu Lussurgiu at Antica Dimora del Gruccione, where you are able to enjoy the unforgettable gourmet dinner prepared at hotel the restaurant.

Day 4 Santu Lussurgiu to Oristano & Sinis Peninsula. 104km / 64mi. Ascent +675 m.

This route will bring you to the peak of Montiferru and cycling through small Sardinian-Spanish style villages. After Cuglieri, it’s all downhill towards the sea with its suggestive landscape sculpted by the wind and sea. Then the ride continues on towards the Sinis Peninsula, where depending on the season you will be able to see pink flamingos on its wetlands and marshes. Overnight in Oristano.

Day 5Oristano, Loop to Fordongianus. 101km / 62mi. Ascent +1223 m.

Heading inland away from the flats, you will ride through charecteristic Sardinian towns, following the Tirso river. This loop will take you to Fordungianus, famous for its thermal baths once enjoyed by Roman Legions and still by visitors today in modern Spa’s. Enjoy this volcanic landscape and its rolling hills which are great for cycling. Bike there and back while passing next to Pre Nuragic tombs, Nuragic villages, and Roman ruins. Return to Oristano throughout the Campidano flat. Overnight in Oristano at Duomo Hotel.

Day 6Oristano to Sardara: the Green Coast. 90km / 52mi. Ascent +1473 m.

Cycling: from Oristano to Sardara via Portu Maga. Our final stage will start out on flats to a fishing village called Marceddì before you ride inland up and across a ridge of the Green Coast. Its roads wind up and down bringing you to a mining town, now turned into a mineral-geologic museum in Montevecchio, close to Arbus. Continue down again to the Campidano flat where the thermal SPA of Sardara awaits you. The Hotel is settled right at the slope of the hill where the ruins of the famous Monreale Castle can still be seen dominating the Campidano flat.

Day 7Arrivederci! or bike ride in the Marmilla region. 50km / 31mi. Rolling Hills

After breakfast, end of the tour or possible for a short loop ride before departure to reach the Unesco World Heritage site of Barumini where a visit is not to be missed of the most famous and most intact Nuraghic village and fortified central tower.

Cycling in the heart of the Marmilla region. This region is what locals call little Tuscany for its never ending rolling hills, little traditional villages in agricultural fields, a rising cycling destination. The key highlight is a visit to the Unesco World Heritage site of Barumini , an iconic archeologic prehistoric site in Sardinia where one can find one of the best examples of a Nuraghic village with its enormous central tower dating back to 2500BC.

Beautiful landscape, unique boutique hotels, great food and wonderful biking, basically describes our experience with Bike Tour Sardinia. We went from Alghero to Oristano, exploring the medieval towns and coast. Mauro arranged a relatively seamless and fabulous self-guided adventure, being consistently available, helpful and responsive. We had both e-bikes and standard, but for me, the e-bike added ease and the ability for further exploration and smiles. I highly recommend Bike Tour Sardinia as a way to explore this beautiful island.
