Tuna fishery, the seizure has begun: “Girotonno, it’s already a record”
While the tuna fishery of Sulcis are getting ready for the seizure, everything is ready for the international event called Girotonno 2014, from Friday 30th May to Monday 2nd June.
2014 is going to be the tuna year. After some quiet seasons, now the good news coming from Sulcis (which is a land of tuna-fishing nets) have created great expectations. In Porto Paglia (Gonnesa) the traditional tuna fishing is back to relaunch tuna production made in Sulcis. The fishing percentage for the Sardinian fixed machinery has been confirmed, that is 165 tons, so that this week the seizure should start at last. The official confirmation should arrive this morning from the Ministry of Agricultural Policy, unless there is any other problem. That’s not all. This week all the last agreements for the Girotonno 2014 will be defined. The Municipality has decided almost everything for the 4 days, from Friday 30th May to Monday 2nd June.
The fishing. Giuliano Greco, attorney general of the Carloforte Tonnara Piam, prefers to be cautious: ‘Unofficially the decree is ready, but I prefer to have the official document in my hands before making any prevision’. The ok is waited for this morning. ‘This year, if the percentage allows it, we have decided to destine 15-20 tons to the direct production of tune in order to sell the product on the local market’. The tuna-fishing nets of Isola Piana, Capo Altano and Porto Paglia are ready.
Carloforte. The Mayor Marco Simeone has no doubts: ‘It’s going to be a record event’. And according to the numbers of Girotonno 2014 he is right: 200.000 visitors are going to come here, in addition to 50 qualified journalists, of which 35 are from international mastheads. There will be hundreds of chefs who are going to cook live on the big stage delicacies based on tuna. ‘In the hotels we already have many bookings. Many touristic infrastructure are involved, in particular in Portoscuso, Sant’Antioco and Calasetta. But they are not the only ones.
The event. The tickets, costing 15 euros, include gourmet tastes proposed by very famous chefs. There will be 15 courses: seven starters, three main courses, four second courses, fruits and dessert, wine and beer. There is also the possibility to buy a baby-menu costing 5 euros. ‘It is a big quality engagement – says the Mayor – in cooperation with Calasetta and Portoscuso, which have made their harbor areas available’. Ferries: ‘We are waiting for an answer from Saremar line, while the Delcomar line is going to make Sardinian residents pay a return ticket costing 3 euros’. Massimo Giletti and Novella Calligaris will be leading the event.
