Follow the Giro,
From Alghero to Cagliari.
A Unique Bike Tour in Sardinia dedicated to celebrate the 100th edition of the Giro D’Italia with its Grande Partenza starting on the island of Sardinia.
2017 will be Giro D’Italias 100th edition, a historic milestone that will start from the scenic setting of Sardinia for the third time in its long history. Our tour will kick off with a Welcome to Sardinia Loop and Teams Presentation in Alghero, Follow three in line pro stages on the island: Alghero-Olbia (203km), Olbia-Tortolì (208km) and Tortolì-Cagliari (148km) and finish up with a Farewell Coastal Loop from Pula.
The Corsa Rosa was raced for the first time in Sardinia in 1961; an occasion which marked the 100th anniversary of the Birth of the Italian kingdom. Thirty years later, in 1991, the island saw its first Grande Partenza, with two in line stages and two semi-stages, one of which was a time trial. The Giro d’Italia’s 90th edition started in Sardinia with the spectacular Caprera-Maddalena Team Time Trial and the unforgettable Teams Presentation on the Italian aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi. After 10 years away, the Corsa Rosa returns to the Sardinian roads.

DAY 3 – May 5th First Stage: Alghero – Olbia
Distance: 132.5 Km Elevation: +1082m / -1207m
Moderately hilly stage: a constant series of rolling hills along the northern coast of the island with three King of the Mountains (KOM) climbs and many other short punchy climbs. The last categorized climb, 20km before the finish line, is San Pantaleo, which could become a launch ramp for the breakaway to anticipate the sprinters. It’s a 5km climb with 3km average incline of around 8%, the toughest section being in the first part. The route undulates again with rolling hills until the finish line in Olbia, where teams should work hard to end up in a bunch sprint.
Dinner included at hotel restaurant
Lodging: Stazzu lu Ciaccaru in Arzachena
DAY 4 – May 6th Second Stage: Olbia – Tortoli
Distance: 187.5 Km / 116 mi Elevation: +3212m / -3388m
This Medium Mountain stage could end up in a bunch sprint but a strong breakaway may show their talents on this stage. The first part will be fought in the Nuoro region, an internal part of the island, and is characterized by three long climbs: the first categorized KOM is toward Bitti and Orune, the second harder KOM climb is just before Nuoro city centre and the third KOM is to overcome the Genna Silana Pass. The last 50km are mostly descents or rolling flats, but the course with many turns could create problems to close eventual gaps. This stage could end up with a bunch sprint but this has to be orchestrated.
Dinner on your own in Santa Maria Navarrese
Lodging: hotel Nascar in Santa Maria Navarrese
DAY 5 – May 7th Third Stage: Tortoli – Cagliari
Distance: 132.5 Km / 82 mi Elevation: +1082m / -1207m
This stage is almost completely flat with few mild hills along the way. After Villasimius there are some short punchy climbs as we ride along the coast. After that the road becomes flat toward the finish line in Cagliari until what’s likely to be a bunch sprint.
Transfer: to Pula from Cagliari after Podium Awards / Closing Ceremony saying goodbye to the pro Peloton.
Dinner included in Pula
Lodging: Nora Club in Pula
DAY 6 – May 8th Farewell Loop Ride: Pula
Distance: 124 Km / 77 mi Elevation: +1442 m / -1449 m
We will ride inland through summer village towns of Pula towards Domus de Maria and face the only big climb just before Teulada. Continue on rolling hills to San Anna Arresi to the long sandy beaches and sand dunes of Porto Pino. Then we can enjoy the rolling hills while skirting the fantastic seaside beaches like Tuaredda and sandy coves of Baia Chia with their crystalline waters, giving it a Caribean feel. It is only the Spanish Towers and Mediterranean vegetation, in particular the juniper trees (“Ginepro” typical of this region) that remind you that this fantastic island is in the Mediterenean. Continue along the Coast all the way back to ancient Nora/Pula where a warm shower and a farewell dinner will await us for our hard work and tribute to Grande Partenza of the 100th edition of the Giro D’Italia, Corsa Rosa!
