Cycling in the Old Sardinian Kingdom, Roman Ruins and Nuraghi

This tour is designed for those who want to taste a little bit of everything the culture and history of Italy and Sardinia as to offer. Starting from Oristano you can visit the ruins of two ancient cities: a port named Tharros, built by the Carthaginians and brought to blooming by the Romans, and the site of Barumini, built by the ancient inhabitants of Sardinia, which is called “Su Nuraxi” (il Nuraghe), a UNESCO heritage site. You’ll ride along ponds and lagoons where nature is still unspoiled and and you’ll meet on your way the beautiful pink flamingos, all enclosed in the beautiful Sinis Peninsula, which has become a Protected Marine Reserve many years ago. You’ll ride in one of the most beautiful areas of Europe, named Costa Verde where sea and land meet to create the most beautiful breathtaking scenery of Sardinia. The citys where you are going to stay are full of history and walking in the streets will be as exciting as living in the Italian Middle Ages.

Description Day by Day

Day one: Welcome to Oristano Welcome in Oristano. It is located in the west-central coast of Sardinia, facing the homonym bay.
You arrive in the first hotel in Oristano, your home for the next three nights. The hotel is an old cloister of the Capuchins, recently modernized and is located in the center of the town, near the Duomo. This little city (about thirty thousand inhabitants), is famous for its horserace which takes place in the days of carnival, called Sartiglia. Your hotel is located in the first way of the horserace, but don’t worry, it takes place only in February. Meet and Greet, with Bike Tour Sardinia rapresentative and we’ll fit your bikes and introduce you to each day ride. Then a welcome aperitif together at the hotel bar.

Day two: Tharros and the Sinis Peninsula
Loop bike ride Cabras, Tharros, Oristano.
Distance 54 km/65 mi all flat Today departure for the peninsula of “Sinis,” where there are plenty of ponds and lagoons and where, depending on the season, you will be able to see wonderful pink flamingos. You’ll pass through Riola Sardo and then ride over the Cabras lagoon, visit the ruins of the Punic-Roman port city of “Tharros” with a breathtaking view. The tour will continue in Marina di Torre Grande where you can stop for lunch at the restaurants of the town for taste unforgettable peppered mussels. Come back to the hotel by bicycle path.

Day trhee: Santu Lussurgiu and Volcano of Montiferru
Loop bike ride from Oristano by Zeddiani, Bonarcado, Cabras.
Distance 49km / 30 mi rolling hill or 60 km / 37 miles rolling hill Today you cycle in the direction of the mountain overlooking the plains of the Campidano: Montiferru. Leaving Oristano a gentle climb will take you to Milis and then the way will begin to rise up to Bonarcado, where you can visit the historic monastery. From here you will return to Oristano down in the direction of Cabras, However those who want to climb to Santu Lussurgiu, a beautiful medieval town nestled in the mouth of the extinct volcano of Montiferru, can cycle 17 km more

Day four: Portu Maga and the Green Coast
Bike ride from Oristano to Portu Maga via Arborea, Marceddì.
Distance 54 km/33,5 mi; first part plain and hilly right before reaching the sea. Departure from Oristano to cross the gulf of the same name, through Arborea and the typical fisherman village of Marceddì. After crossing the lagoon of Marceddì it begins the fantastic Costa Verde with its majestic scenery and its unspoiled landscapes. You will come to Portu Maga and stay in a hotel with a fantastic view on the sea. Tonight you can not miss a fantastic dinner at the hotel restaurant “il Corsaro Nero” and do not miss an unforgettable sunset.

Day five: the Old Mines of Montevecchio
Bike ride from Portu Maga to Sardara via Montevecchio, Guspini, Pabillonis.
Distance 50 km/31 mi hilly and flat. You leave the hotel and ride along the coast and then back towards the mine area of Montevecchio, the heart of today’s ride. The function of the mining area was active until 1991 and from there onwards there was a relentless depopulation of the area, but with the establishment of the Geo-Mining Park, and the Environmental History of Sardinia, Recognized by UNESCO, this area has become a resource for active tourism. Approaching Sardara, you will meet the majestic castle of Monreale built in Judical epoch to defend the town of Sardara and Sanluri, and under it you’ll meet the famous thermal baths of Santa Maria Aquas. In the hotel a confortable SPA with swimming pool will be waiting for you.

Day six: Barumini & Nuraghes
Loop bike ride to Barumini, Villanovaforru and Collinas.
Distance 57 km/35, 5 mi rolling hill Taking minor roads you will cycle up and down in the hilly region of the Marmilla highlight and you’ll come across Barumini, a small village situated in the middle of Sardinia, known for the most important archaeological sites of the island, the Nuraghic complex, which is not to be missed. Sardinia is well-known not only for its natural beauties but also for its typical and peculiar buildings called Nuraghe, first appearing during the Bronze Age, a symbol of this island. A guide will introduce you to the history. Coming back it is worth a visit to Villanovaforru village.

Day seven: after breakfast end of the tour
train (to San Gavino Monreale) or private transfer available to Cagliari or other destination on the island
