Pedaling and Zig-Zagging Sardinia – Italy Guided Bike Tour

Sardinia cartina Zig Zagging

A Unique Bike Tour in Sardinia, Cycling on the Flavours Island

An ancient land with an ancient language, Sardinia is a unique fascinating place.  Its coastline is probably the most spectacular in Europe, its waters teem with fish and shellfish. Its rugged mountains, pocketed with caves, welcome large flocks of sheep that feed on wild plants and produce a cheese your palate will never forget. While a winding coastal drive-perfect for a roadster -offers dramatic Mediterranean views and a powerful adrenaline rush, the real highlights are the actual rock formations, or more precisely, the prehistoric stone dwellings found in the mountainous interior. The island is home to more than 7,000 stone Nuraghi towers, Bronze Age castles built between 1600 and 1100 B.C.

Description Day By Day

Day One – Arrival to Alghero
Arrival to Alghero airport and transfer to hotel Villa Mosca. Bike fitting. The Sardinian town of Alghero is a lively, pretty city and a flourishing tourist attraction not only for the summer masses and elite tourism, but also for a new cosmopolitanism.
Welcome dinner at restaurant Al Tuguri,
Lodging: Hotel Villa Mosca

Day Two – Loop Bosa via Villanova Monteleone and back skirting the coastline.
Distance: 105km / 65.5mi
The ride to Bosa is 60km inland via Villanova through a cork oak forest. Admire the murales in Montresta. Bosa was founded in ancient times. It was a strongly fortified town, from around the year 1000, and enjoyed considerable prosperity as a result of its strategic position. Included dinner in Alghero
Lodging Hotel Villa Mosca

Day Three – Ride to Oliena via Ittiri, Thiesi and Foresta di Burgos to Bono or to Nuoro
Distance: 95km / 59mi ending in Bono, or 140km / 87.5mi ending in Nuoro.
We will ride in fields of artichokes and forests. First stop after 50km in Thiesi for a cappuccino. Back in the saddle for the challenging part of the day to arrive in the Foresta di Burgos area with a long hilltop climb. Once there, it would be a pity not to enjoy the downhill into Bono where we can have a light lunch in the village. Now recharged, there is an optional extension ride to Nuoro or direct transfer to our lodging in Oliena, hotel su Gologone: an artistic hotel you will love.
Lodging: Hotel Su Gologone.

Day Four – Bike ride inland: Dorgali, Baunei, Santa Maria navarrese.
Distance: 90km / 55mi.
Our goal is Arbatax, a small harbor town in the Ogliastra region. The centre of this small village arises at the beginning of Cape Bellavista territory, enriched with the green colored Mediterranean scrub and famous for the characteristic red rocks and masses of porphyritic granite located close to the harbor. Enjoy the up and down to Baunei, it looks more like a mountain village than a seaside village, despite its position near the sea. The vast area inland is also extremely beautiful especially the Golgo, a wild and empty calcareous plateau lying above the town. Let’s enjoy a very long downhill from Baunei until we stop in Santa Maria Navarrese, where a cluster of country houses surround a rural church on the splendid and unspoiled coastline.
Gourmet dinner at Hotel.
Lodging: Hotel Arbatasar.

Day Five – Bike ride to Barumini via Perdasdefogu, Orroli, Nurri.
Distance: 88km / 55mi
Sardinia is well known not only for its natural beauties but also for its typical and peculiar buildings called Nuraghe, first appearing during the Bronze Age, symbolic of this island.
Barumini is a small village situated in the middle of Sardinia, known for the most important archaeological site of the island. We will visit the nuraghic complex with a guide. Back in the saddle and pedal to Guspini across a few rolling hills ahead of us.
Gourmet dinner at hotel.
Lodging: Hotel Tartesh.

Day Six – Bike ride to Carbonia via coasts of Buggerru and Fontanamare.
Distance: 95km / 59mi
Let’s start warming up our muscles with a gentle downhill from Sardara and on the flats. Then push up to Arbus through prickly pears (everywhere in Sardinia). Lean through the curvy downhill to reach a little fishing village of Buggerru and enjoy the beautiful views of this wild coast. Admire the “pan di Zucchero” an outcropping of rock standing 133 meters out of the sea which has two natural arches. End of ride in Fontanamare and take a short transfer to visit the cellars of Cantine 6Mura, or Cantine Mesa for wine tasting. After wine tasting, we transfer to Pula for the charming and elegant Is Morus hotel with a private beach. Included dinner in Pula.
Lodging: Relais Is Morus

Day Seven – Loop on the coast via Domus de Maria, Teulada and Chia.
Distance: 66km / 41mi
We will ride inland towards Domus de Maria and we face the only big hill just before Teulada. Then we will enjoy the ups and downs skirting Baia Chia. It is a fantastic seaside spot: white sandy beaches, high sand dunes and the crystalline water suggest a Caribbean feel. It is only the Mediterranean vegetation and in particular the juniper trees, “Ginepro” typical of this region, which remind you that this fantastic island is in the Mediterenean. Farewell dinner at Agriturismo le Margherite.
Lodging: Hotel Is Morus

Day Eight – End of tour breakfast and transfer to Cagliari airport included.
