Cycling in the Old Sardinian Kingdom, Roman Ruins and Nuraghi

This bike tour is designed for those who want to taste a little bit of everything the culture and history of Italy and Sardinia as to offer. Starting from Oristano you’llvisit the ruins of two ancient cities: Tharros, built by the Carthaginians and brought to blooming by the Romans, and the site of Barumini, called “Su Nuraxi”, a UNESCO World heritage site. You will walk on the beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean Sea, and ride along ponds and lagoons where you’ll meet on your way the beautiful pink flamingos, all enclosed in the beautiful Sinis Peninsula. You’ll ride in Costa Verde (Green Coast) where sea and land meet to create the most beautiful breathtaking scenery of Sardinia and Italy. The streets are almost always devoid of traffic, they are well paved and the people are really friendly, and they will make you enjoy the extraordinary culinary delights of the region. The citys where you are going to stay are full of history and walking in the streets will be as exciting as living in the Italian Middle Ages.

Day by Day

DAY 1 Benvenuti to Oristano
Meet and Greet, with Bike Tour Sardinia rapresentative and we’ll fit your bikes and introduce you to each day ride. Then a welcome aperitif together at the hotel bar.

DAY 2 Tharros and Sinis Peninsula. Distance 54km / 33mi all flat
Loop bike ride: from Oristano to the Sinis peninsula. Departure for the peninsula of “Sinis,” where there are plenty of lagoons and wetlands where you will be able to see pink flamingos. The Sinis peninsula is also a Marine Reserve Area. Visit the ruins of the Punic-Roman port “Tharros” with a breathtaking view or the beach of Is Arutas with its pebbled white sand. You’ll cross Cabras, famous for its “Bottarga”, dried fish eggs or  Sardinian caviar.

DAY 3 Santu Lussurgiu and Volcano of Montiferru. Distance 49km/30 mi or 60km/37 mi
Loop bike ride: from Oristano to Milis and Bonarcado. Leaving Oristano a gentle climb will take you to Montiferru mountain. From here you will return to Oristano down in the direction of Cabras, However those who want to climb to Santu Lussurgiu, a beautiful medieval town nestled in the mouth of the extinct volcano of Montiferru.

DAY 4 Portu Maga and the Green Coast. Distance 54 km / 33,5 mi
Bike ride from Oristano to Portu Maga (Arbus). Departure from Oristano to cross its gulf and onwards by the lagoons of Marceddì begins the fantastic Costa Verde with its unspoiled landscapes. In the evening do not miss an unforgettable sunset in Portu Maga.

DAY 5 Monreale Castle & Montevecchio Old Mines. Distance 50 km / 31 mi
Bike ride from Portu Maga to Sardara: Leaving Portu Maga you ride towards the mine area of Montevecchio, recognized by UNESCO, the heart of today’s ride. Approaching Sardara, you will admire the castle of Monreale, and under it you’ll find the famous thermal baths of Santa Maria Aquas, your accommodation. In the hotel a comfortable SPA with swimming pool will be waiting for you.

DAY 6  Barumini & Nuraghi. Distance 57 km/35, 5 mi
Loop bike ride from Sardara to BaruminiTaking minor roads you will cycle up and down in the hilly region of Marmilla. Your goal is Barumini known for the Nuragic complex (UNESCO HERITAGE SITE). Sardinia is well-known also for its typical tower structures called Nuraghe, first appearing during the Bronze Age.

DAY 7 Arrivederci
